Shoot the Pianist (1960)
Francois Truffaut's loving homage to Hollywood gangster films is less a plot-filled film noir than a free-associative meditation on the genre. Charles Aznavour stars as a one-time concert pianist who gained fame as Edouard Saroyan but has since changed his name to Charlie Kohler and plays honky-tonk in an out-of-the-way saloon. His self-imposed exile is shattered by the appearance of his mobster brother Richard Saroyan (Jacques Aslanian). Richard and his other brother, Chico (Albert Remy), are on the lam from gangsters they've double-crossed. Charlie helps Richard and Chico get away, but he now finds that his life, along with his younger brother Fido's (Richard Kanayan, has been put into jeopardy, having gotten mixed up with gangsters Momo (Claude Mansard) and Ernest (Daniel Boulanger) who are pursuing Richard and Chico. Momo and Ernest keep an eye on Charlie's apartment and, although they don't get Fido, they manage to kidnap Charlie and Lena (Marie Dubois), a co-worker with whom he has fallen in love. But when Ernest runs a red light and is pulled over, Charlie and Lena escape the gangsters' clutches. They take refuge in Lena's apartment, where Charlie sees a poster for a performance by Edouard Saroyan, causing Charlie to think back upon the circumstances that had led him to this moment in his life. Lena and Charlie make love, and Charlie returns to his apartment, only to discover Fido has been kidnapped. Lena and Charlie then head back to his club, where they plan to quit their jobs and try to find Fido.

Jules and Jim (1962)
In the years leading up to World War I, Jules and Jim are inseparable friends. Living in Paris gives them ample opportunities to expand their horizons as they discuss politics, the arts and life in general. Jim is something of a ladies man but Jules isn't so lucky. They soon meet Catherine, a free spirit and the three of them enjoy life together. She soon agrees to marry Jules but with the arrival of the war Jules, a German, return to his home country to serve in the army. Jim serves in the French army and both survive the war. It is a happy day when the two friends are reunited but Jules admits that his marriage has been less than successful and that Catherine has taken many lovers over the years. He loves her very much however and will go to any lengths to keep her with him. Jim and Catherine soon become lovers, with Jules' tacit approval, but Catherine's own needs and desires lead to tragedy.

Pierre Lachenay, a middle-aged, well-known publisher and lecturer, is married to Franca, an unbalanced woman, and father of Sabine, a 10-year-old girl. While traveling to Lisbon for a lecture, Pierre Lachenay has a one night stand with Nicole, the Panair do Brasil air stewardess. He wants to see her again and again, they travel to Reims together, and Pierre hides the affair from his family, mostly to spare his daughter the anguish of a separation. Nicole is taking it lightly but Pierre, misunderstanding her feelings and expectations, decides to live with her. The couple's break-up leads to a tragic end.

However their mothers propose they separate for a year and do not communicate to see if they have real feelings for one another. But after six months in Paris, Claude is seduced by many lovers and sends a letter to Muriel calling off their commitment. When Claude meets Ann in Paris later, they have a love affair; but Claude still has feelings for Muriel.

A Gorgeous Girl Like Me (1972)
A sociologist researching a book interviews murderess Camille, who tells him the story of her life. Put in a reform school as a child for suspected patricide, and later transferred to an orphanage, she escaped and tricked a young man called Clovis into marrying her. After attempting to kill Clovis' mother, she fled to Paris, where she began an affair with a night-club singer. Camille has left a trail of destruction and deceit in her wake, which now threatens to engulf the sociologist.

The Last Metro (1980)
In Nazi-occupied Paris, actress and businesswoman Marion Steiner manages her theater in the absence of her husband, the noted directed Lucas Steiner. Lucas, a Jew, is believed to have escaped the occupied area just prior to the German arrival but he is in fact hiding out in the theater's basement. The company is rehearsing Lucas's most recent play and he is passing notes to his wife throughout rehearsals. Marion has much to put up as finances are meager and they are under constant pressure from the authorities over the content of their plays. They persevere however, working and waiting for their circumstances to improve.

Bernard and Mathilde know each other, they were once passionately in love but went their separate ways. Once reunited, the pair start a fervent but turbulent affair. Torn between their unyielding lust for each other and the comfort and stability that is their marriages, this really is a case of can't live with and can't live without. The ghost of a tempestuous affair is reawakened when the two lovers, estranged for 10 years and now both newly married, coincidentally move next door to each other. François Truffaut wrote the leading roles especially for his two stars, Gerard Depardieu and Fanny Ardant.

As the police discover that Marie-Christine Vercel, Julien's wife, was Massoulier's mistress, Julien is very suspected. But his secretary, Barbara Becker, while not quite convinced he is innocent, defends him and leads her private investigations...

A Gorgeous Girl Like Me (1972)*French & English audio with English subtitles*
A young sociology lecturer is writing a thesis on woman offenders and in the course of his researches he comes across an out-of-the-ordinary prisoner, who recounts her story with such unrepentant verve and total lack of self-consciousness that he is completely taken aback and, just for a moment, is shaken out of his polite attitude.

The Last Metro (1980)
Paris, 1942. Lucas Steiner is a Jew and was compelled to leave the country. His wife Marion, an actress, directs the theater for him. The relationship revives... A somber study of human feelings.

Finally, Sunday (1983)
When Julien (Jean-Louis Trintignant) is accused of murdering his wife and his wife's lover, his secretary, Barbara (Fanny Ardant) is determined to clear his name. François Truffaut's stylish thriller is reminiscent of pulp fiction murder mysteries from the 1930s and 1940s, with Fanny Ardant delightful as the sarcastic amateur detective. Based on Charles Williams' novel, The Long Saturday Night, François Truffaut deftly blends moments of hilarity, romance and intrigue into a film that was to be the swansong for one of France's greatest ever directors.
