Synopsis:
The year was 1942-1949. It tells the stories of Indonesian Dutch children who had to live outside the internment camp run by the invading Japanese troops in the former Dutch East Indies (Indonesia). This film documents their mother's struggle to survive and above all keep their children safe against all odds.

Too little is known about this war in the Netherlands East Indies… not knowing this story amounts to denying it. If you deny this has ever happened, you are actually denying me. But I am here, am I not? Right after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor, the Netherlands government in exile in London declared war on Japan. This put more than 350,000 Dutch nationals in the Netherlands East Indies at risk. This is the story of the people classified by the Japanese as non-Dutch citizens because of their mixed European- Asian parentage. They were children then, and recalled their experiences under Japanese occupation and the Indonesian revolution following it. 'Food was very hard to come by, we were skin and bones' 'We were oppressed by the Japanese while after the war, the Indonesian people turned against us, which was far worse' This documentary film pays tribute to their mothers who struggled to survive and keep their children safe against all odds.

Hidden History of Dutch East Indies.
