Synopsis:
The First World War brought lots of young men in the trenches to ponder certain questions: what am I doing here? For whom am I risking my life? Ignaz Wolz, for whom the world had been fine until the First World War, returns from it with hatred for the exploitative capitalist hierarchy and commences his own war a war against the rich. What he takes from them, he distributes generously to the poor. As a man of action he is not interested in programs or visions but in activity itself. His friend, Ludwig, tries unsuccessfully to steer this stormy anarchist towards revolutionary activity and stands by him when he is sentenced to lifelong imprisonment. Beautiful Agnes, who is in love with Ludwig, even marries the imprisoned Wolz so contact can be maintained to him. Wolz is released after seven years and is still not prepared to give up his radical position: there must be a country somewhere that needs fighters like him.

It has been 100 years since the start of the First World War. More than 10 million people lost their lives between 1914 and 1918, and twice as many were injured or crippled. The First World War was a significant theme for the film artists of the Deutsche Film-Aktiengesellschaft (DEFA), the East German film company founded in 1946. The suffering of working people, the misery of life in the factories and poor accommodation in cities, the growing organisation of resistance to warmongers and profiteers, as well as the battle for a better world are the topics of this extraordinary collection of films.
