Synopsis:
Claude Massoulier is murdered while hunting at the same place than Julien Vercel, an estate agent that knew him and whose fingerprints are found on Massoulier's car. As the police discovers that Marie-Christine Vercel, Julien's wife, was Massoulier's mistress, Julien is very suspected. But his secretary, Barbara Becker, while not quite convinced he is innocent, defends him and leads her private investigations...

When Julien (Jean-Louis Trintignant) is accused of murdering his wife and his wife's lover, his secretary, Barbara (Fanny Ardant) is determined to clear his name. François Truffaut's stylish thriller is reminiscent of pulp fiction murder mysteries from the 1930s and 1940s, with Fanny Ardant delightful as the sarcastic amateur detective. Based on Charles Williams' novel, The Long Saturday Night, François Truffaut deftly blends moments of hilarity, romance and intrigue into a film that was to be the swansong for one of France's greatest ever directors.

Julien Vercel, an estate agent, is suspected of murdering his wife's lover. All clues point to him especially when his wife is also found dead. As Vercel is hidden in his office, Barbara Becker, his secretary investigates these suspicious murders. With her help the true identity of the killer is uncovered.
