The Moth (1997)
Set in 1913 Northumbria, England, the story is about Robert Bradley, a strong-willed young worker at a Jarrow shipyard, who arrives home one day to find that his father has died. At the funeral he meets his father's estranged brother, his uncle John Bradley, and his wife Alice who offer Robert a new home and a place in his uncle's carpentry workshop. Robert accepts and after a few weeks at his new home, he is out walking late one night on the grounds of a rundown estate when he meets an ethereal young girl, Millie Thorman, whom the locals call the Moth, and befriends her. All seems to be going well for Robert until his cousin, Carrie, is revealed to be pregnant. Robert is immediately the suspected father, which he adamantly denies, but no one believes him. Even worse Carrie will not say who the real father is because she has always had a crush on Robert, and would rather marry him. Robert refuses to take the responsibility, shocking the townspeople, and leaves his relative's house, finding a place to work on the estate of Millie Thorman's once wealthy, now debt-ridden family. It is there that a mutual attraction develops between Robert and Sarah Thorman, Millie's older sister, but their social differences and Robert's reputation stand in their way.
The Black Velvet Gown (1991)
In the 1830's in northern England, Riah Millican, a widow with three children, takes a job as housekeeper to a reclusive former teacher, Percival Miller. Miller makes Riah the gift of a black velvet gown, and even educates her children. But when Riah discovers the reason behind Miller's gifts, she vows to leave his house, but Miller has a hold on her, even after his death, when he leaves his house to her on the condition that she never marry. Riah's daughter, Biddy, grows up and becomes a laundress in a large house where her education keeps her from fitting in and makes her a target. But it also catches the eye of a son of the house, and with Miller's legacies, Biddy may yet find her way to happiness.
The Black Candle (1991)
Yorkshire in the 1880's: Joe Skinner marries Lily Whitmore, the woman he has long admired, to give a name to her illegitimate child by Lionel Fillmore, the opportunistic son of an impoverished aristocrat. Lionel, however, has his sights set on Victoria, the naive cousin of hard-working Bridget Mordaunt, and the wealth he wrongly assumes is hers. When Joe's shiftless brother Fred threatens his marriage plans, Lionel murders him and the blame falls on Joe. Bridget's warm regard for Joe sets her on a quest to prove his innocence, the pursuit of which reveals the sordid manipulations and evil that surround Lionel. Just when Lionel believes his crime will never be discovered, Douglas, his gentle sculptor brother finds the murder weapon - and the killer's identity.
The Secret (2000)
Period thriller serial. In the late 1880's reformed smuggler Freddie Musgrave has worked hard to turn a legitimate trade, but then a face from his past turns up threatening to ruin things for him.
The Mallen Streak (1979)
The first part of the Mallen family saga. Thomas Mallen, the Squire of High Banks Hall, fathers many illegitimate sons, each of whom inherit a distinctive streak of white hair. Forced to sell the Hall, Thomas moves to humbler surroundings, taking with him his wards, Barbara and Constance, and their governess, Anna Brigmore. The young girls find romance with the Radlet brothers, one of whom, Donald, is acknowledged by Thomas as his bastard son.
The Mallen Girls (1979)
Second part of the Mallen family saga. Squire Mallen's bastard son, Donald Radlet, and his brother Mathew are frequent visitors to his cottage. Constance falls in love with Mathew, but is persuaded to marry Donald. One night Barbara is raped on her way back to the cottage.
The Mallen Secret (1980)
Third part in the Mallen family saga. Thomas Mallen has now killed himself, and his illegitimate daughter Barbara is shielded from the truth by her governess, Miss Brigmore. When she falls in love with her cousin Michael, they discover the truth behind her birth. The knowledge of her mother's rape threatens to plunge Barbara into tragedy.
The Mallen Curse (1980)
The fourth and final instalment of the Mallen family saga. Barbara, rejected by Michael, enters into a loveless marriage with a son of the Benshams, who now own Squire Thomas' former home, High Banks. Meanwhile, Mr Bensham proposes to Anna Brigmore, Barbara's former governess, who has a burning ambition to become mistress of the house.
