Synopsis:

Kati is the family's shy, gentle one, who never liked to be the center of attention. But today is her day, and everyone has gathered at the convent that is now her home; for Kati is about to take her vows to become a nun. Yet something is wrong. The ceremony is delayed. Is Kati reflecting on her family's unanimous disapproval of her decision? Her domineering mother's insistence that her daughters 'make something' of their lives no longer reaches her. If anyone can convince Kati to give up her project, it's her older sister Saskia, who shares a special bond with her. But who is she to prevent Kati from 'throwing her life away;' she's done the same herself. As Kati, whose vow of silence forbids her to speak, spends an intensely heartbreaking yet consoling moment with Saskia, the rest of the family goes picnicking until Kati is ready. A lush green meadow now hosts a get-together of reproaches and disillusionment, anger and resentment, bees, cows and a family that is, in the end, surprisingly resilient and strong.

The happening of a ceremonial robing of the youngest daughter as a novice in a Swabian convent screws up the values of a modern family. As if life wasn't complicated enough anyway. And how are you supposed to be happy without new clothes?

Maria Schrader (AIMÉE AND JAGUAR) and Ursula Werner ('Cloud 9') are mother and daughter in SISTERS, a sensitive drama from director Anne Wild.
