Synopsis:
The Seventies. A quest for spirituality and sexual freedom. In England, young Hugh Milne hears the voice of spiritual teacher Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh on an audiotape and travels to India in search of his own self. Sheela Patel, a young Indian woman, is brought to the charismatic guru by her father. In his Ashram in Poona, Bhagwan urges his disciples to meditate and practise tantric sex in order to reach a higher plane of consciousness. Hugh watches the guru's ascent as a bodyguard, Sheela becomes his secretary and later the powerful boss of Bhagwan's model community in the mountains of Oregon. The dream turns into a nightmare, for Hugh into a mental breakdown, for Sheela into a prison sentence.

At the beginning of the 1970s Hugh Milne listens to a cassette of the spiritual teacher, Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, and makes a trip from England to India in a search to find himself. Sheela Birnstiel (Patel) is taken by her father to meet the charismatic guru. Bhagwan urges his disciples to practice meditation and tantric sexuality. Hugh accompanies the rise of the guru while acting as his bodyguard. Birnstiel becomes the head of the model commune that springs to life in the 1980s in the mountains of Oregon. The dream ends as a nightmare, for Hugh in a nervous breakdown and for Sheela in prison. But the journey is not yet over. Several journalists recorded the events of Bhagwan's rise and fall.

GURU - Bhagwan, His Secretary & His Bodyguard is a film directed by Sabine Gisiger and Beat Häner. The film is based on the life of Guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh as witnessed through the eyes of his secretary Sheela Birnstiel and bodyguard Hugh Milne.
