Her spending on dresses and furnishings mounts; these debts and her ill-advised professional counsel to her husband bring his ruin.

Madame Bovary (2000)
Young and amiable country doctor Charles Bovary (Hugh Bonneville) takes a wife, Emma (Frances O'Connor), after a pleasant courtship. However, Emma's lofty expectations of marriage, and later motherhood, are soon dissolved and replaced by a sense of oppression and mediocrity. Twenty Thousand Streets Under the Sky (2005)
Originally published under the title Twenty Thousand Streets in 1935, author Patrick Hamilton's semi-autobiographical trilogy is adapted for the screen by director Simon Curtis and screenwriter Kevin Elyot. The story is set in and around The Midnight Bell, a public house off the Euston Road. There, a bartender named Bob pines for pretty prostitute Jenny, despite the sad fact that she has not a penny to her name. Meanwhile, Bob remains blissfully unaware of the romantic glimpses cast his way by co-worker Ella, who is currently being courted by an older, wealthier gentleman, and desperate local Jenny struggles to keep her head about water after being forced out on the streets by circumstance.
Nicholas Nickleby (1977)
After the death of his father, Nicholas Nickleby along with his sister Kate and their mother find themselves in difficult conditions. They relocate to London in the hope that Uncle Ralph Nickleby, a successful businessman, will help them out but he proves to be difficult and cold towards his relatives. Nicholas sets off on a series of adventures starting as a school master for the one-eyed Wackford Squeers. He soon escapes the school and in the company of his new friend Smike, joins a theater group in Portsmouth. Good fortune befalls him when he meets the Cheerybles who offer him stable employment. His uncle has taken a severe dislike to the boy however and goes out of his way to make life difficult for him.
