Synopsis:
Divorced and creeping past middle age, real estate agent Frank Harmon (William Holden) isn't interested in falling in love anymore. But when he reluctantly picks up impoverished teenage hitchhiker Breezy (Kay Lenz) outside his Los Angeles home, she manages to break through his gruff facade. Before long, she moves in with him, and the two enjoy an unlikely romance despite their difference in age and beliefs. Problems arise, however, when Frank's peers become critical of his new relationship.

This compassionate, rather complex romantic drama was a real turn-around for actor-turned- filmmaker Clint Eastwood, who had great success with his two, early, more-action-oriented directorial efforts, the spooky Play Misty for Me and High Plains Drifter. The story centers on the crisis of an embittered, recently divorced middle-aged businessman who decides to retreat from the world and the women that have inspired his cynicism. Spending most of his time in his well-appointed California beach house, he avoids people. But when he steps outside one morning and finds a beautiful young hippie chick sleeping on his step, his life suddenly changes. At first he is angry and shoos her off his land. For some reason he doesn't call the cops. She comes back a day later to retrieve her guitar. They talk and he ends up taking the homeless girl in. She leaves, but later returns escorted by the police. Without thinking, he convinces the police that he is her uncle and they release her to him. Time passes and the fellow begins to slowly open up to this lovely free-spirit. Their friendship turns to love and for the first time in ages, the older man is happy. Unfortunately, his friends and colleagues are outraged by the age difference and put pressure upon him. He gives in and dumps her. Fortunately, a tragic event awakens him to the notion that life is meant to be enjoyed and he heads off to find his new love.

Breezy is a teen-aged hippy with a big heart. After taking a ride with a man who only wants her for sex, Breezy manages to escape. She runs to hide on a secluded property where stands the home of a middle-aged divorced man, Frank Harmon. Frank reluctantly takes Breezy in only to fall unexpectedly in love with her.
