A young Parisian boy, Antoine Doinel, neglected by his derelict parents, skips school, sneaks into movies, runs away from home, steals things, and tries (disastrously) to return them. Like most kids, he gets into more trouble for things he thinks are right than for his actual trespasses. Unlike most kids, he gets whacked with the big stick. He inhabits a Paris of dingy flats, seedy arcades, abandoned factories, and workaday streets, a city that seems big and full of possibilities only to a child's eye.

Charlie helps him to escape, but he upsets the two criminals, and they watch Charlie and the waitress Lena, who is in love with him. The shy Cahrlie tells his past to Lena, when he was the former famous pianist Edouard Saroyan, and he quited his successful career after the suicide of his wife, the also waitress Thérèse Saroyan. When his brother Fido Saroyan, who is raised by Charlie, is kidnapped by the gangsters, Charlie has to take an attitude with tragic consequences.

With the First World War, the best friends Jules and Jim are separated, but after the war they reunite in Jules's cottage in Germany. Jim stays with Jules, Catherine and their daughter Sabine, and Jules tells his friend that while he has lived with Catherine she has had affairs with several lovers. When Catherine falls in love with Jim, Jules asks him to stay with her at his house. Along the years, Jules and Jim live a triangle of love with Catherine, but never affecting their friendship and respect.

Guy Montag is a senior fireman who is much respected by his superiors and is in line for a promotion. He doesn't question what he does or why he does it until he meets Clarisse. As his doubts grow, he begins to steal some of the books he is meant to burn.

The investigator invites the clumsy Antoine to work in his company, where he is assigned for some minor jobs, until he has to investigate why the owner of a shoes store, Mr. Georges Tabard, is detested by his employees. Meanwhile Antoine falls in love for the gorgeous Mrs. Fabienne Tabard.

The womanizing Pinson admits to once loving Adèle, but has now moved on to other conquests. His disreputable past, specifically a gambling problem which has resulted in debt, was the reason that M. Hugo would not consent to Adèle ever marrying Pinson. In Halifax, Adèle spends her time either stalking Pinson, dreaming of Pinson or writing in her journal about her feelings concerning her love for him. To others in Halifax, Adèle is a captivating woman, especially to Mr. Whistler, the book store owner who is attracted to her.
