Synopsis:
Within the space of three short months in 1994, a million people were murdered in a state-supported genocide in Rwanda. Populated by two irreconcilable tribes - the Tutsis and the majority Hutus - the country had long been steeped in a divisive antagonism. Encouraged by the Habyarimana government to rage against their Tutsi compatriots, Hutu women as well as men took up arms and went amok killing their neighbours. Recounting their experiences with clarity and a shocking lack of sentimentality are eight female perpetrators, all of whom have been imprisoned for taking part in the genocide. Immaculée, whose self-narration was most prominently featured, admits to being an 'animal' and undeserving of her traumatised son Jérôme's forgiveness. And he laments, 'What is dirty will never regain its purity.' Filmmakers Violaine Baraduc and Alexandre Westphal guide us through some of the darkest atrocities of war by way of the women's memories - and by the impossible love between a mother and her son.

In documentary A Mots Couverts, eight women testify to their part in the Rwandan genocide as they attempt to come to terms with their actions. An emotional, hard hitting attempt at healing some of the open wounds from one of man's darkest hours.

Women who helped perpetrate the genocide in Rwanda recall their stories.
