Synopsis:
Kiko is a teenager whose now dead father was Italian and his mother Marilou is from the Philippines. They live with Ennio, mother's new boyfriend, a foreman who recruits and exploits illegal migrant workers. Kiko goes to school but at the same time he is forced to work in Ennio's building yards. He feels he lives in a wrong planet. There's only one place where Kiko can dream: an old abandoned bus in a dump yard that he's turned into his private refuge. One day it seems his fate could change: an elderly friend of his father's, Ettore, comes looking for Kiko and offers to become a strange kind of tutor for him. But one day Ettore reveals to Kiko his real identity...

A stunning and beautiful portrait of a tragic life, Kiko is struggling through the world after his father's death, now living with his passive mother and her aggressive boyfriend, Ennio. At only sixteen years old, Kiko is forced to labor away in Ennio's building yards, and with no time or energy to study, he is failing nearly all of his classes. With the camera never flinching or turning away, we are forced to watch and cringe as Kiko is tormented by the abuse of his classmates and Ennio. He is pressured into submissiveness - and in all aspects of life, he is never allowed an opinion or voice. His one place of solace is inside an old abandoned bus in a gated dump yard, a location he's turned into his private refuge, decorated with soft lights, artfully placed trinkets, and an array of shelves with photos of his deceased father. In a place everyone else ignores, Kiko hides from his world, sitting for hours talking with his father, and attempting to train his body not to feel the pain that so often inflicts him. When he meets a mysterious older man, Ettore, who is persistent and intent on becoming a part of Kiko's life, Kiko soon gains a mentor he never expected but desperately needed. Ettore manages to kindle Kiko's interest in a profound form of knowledge, and the two spend their time discussing the complex intimacies of the world, delving into philosophers and writers that Kiko begins to incorporate into his own mindset. IF I CLOSE MY EYES I'M NOT HERE allows the time to unfold and articulate; the story follows a mentorship that might give Kiko the strength he needs to rebel and the courage to accept a secret that could break him entirely.
