Synopsis:
The story takes place over 20 or so years, a shepherd is determined to find the woman who left him her baby daughter during the last years of Nazi persecutions and so honour his pledge that he would return the child to her. During his long wanderings through Europe he is accompanied by the child, first a baby, then a toddler, a youngster, a teenager and finally a girl of twenty or so.

This film was made in 1967 for Eurovision TV (« The World's largest Theatre »). It is exceptional in many respects, one is that it is the result of the cooperation between 16 public TV stations in 16 European countries and that each of the 17 countries had a local director take over, all of them basing their treatment on a script written by French author François Billetdoux. The story itself takes place over 20 or so years, a shepherd is determined to find the woman who left him her baby daughter during the last years of Nazi persecutions and so honour his pledge that he would return the child to her. During his long wanderings through Europe he is accompanied by the child, first a baby, then a toddler, a youngster, a teenager and finally a girl of twenty or so. Supplements : Today it's possible, the making of of thé film. This TV programme was broadcast one week after Pitchi Poi. It is particularly interesting as it brings the circumstances of the shooting to life, underlining the intentions, expectations and difficulties of the producers and directors. Claude Singer is a film historian, a specialist on the image of Jews in film, head of the educational dept at the Paris Holocaust Mémorial. In Reflections on Pitchi Poi Claude Singer stresses the outdated image of the Jews presented at at the same time as Le Viel homme et l'enfant, far earlier than the films that constituted a breach like Holocauste, le Chagrin et la Pitié, and later Shoah. Dona, dona sung by Nahema Hendel

May 1944, in Provence, a young Jewish woman fleeing Nazi persecution confides her little girl of three months to a stranger, Mathieu, a solitary shepherd who will raise her alone. At the end of the war, he will cross Europe with the girl to find her mother and honor his promise.
