Synopsis:
Maya! With this word of Hindu origin, Kashmir, the cook on the newly-berthed ship, delights in denouncing the triumph of mere semblance. The local prostitutes are dealers in false promises. Bella (Viviane Romance) is at times Marie the peasant girl for Jean, the boatswain, and at times Emma, the marchioness, for the Oceanic's steward, played by Dalio. So when she believes that she has found in Jean the man who will love her for herself, Bella cannot elude her destiny: she must resign herself to offering to the men who pass through the port the illusion of living their dreams. Adapted from the play by Simon Gantillon, Raymond Bernard's Maya brings together many great names, including Marcel Dalio, Georges Douking, Louis Seigner and the singer Fréhel, and of course Viviane Romance, who plays the lead role here and also produced the film.
