Synopsis:
Award-winning actress Amanda Burton (Silent Witness, The Commander) stars as solicitor and crown prosecutor Helen West in three sophisticated, psychologically gripping feature-length dramas based on the acclaimed suspense novels by Frances Fyfield. A workaholic with a messy personal life, Helen West juggles gruesome cases of domestic abuse, sexual molestation and murder alongside her rocky relationship with policeman Chief Superintendent Bailey (Conor Mullen - Rough Diamond, Holby City). Contains all three feature-length episodes Deep Sleep, Shadow Play & A Clear Conscience.

Season 1
Season 1, Episode 1: Deep Sleep
Original Air Date-6 May 2002
At home recuperating from an operation to remove an ovarian cyst, Crown Prosecutor Helen West begins to review files that have accumulated during her absence. She focuses on the case of Margaret Carlton, who died unexpectedly. Her husband Philip is a pharmacist and he tells his assistant Kim Perry that his wife had become addicted to it and despite his best efforts, couldn't get her off the drug. The police think it's just an accident but Helen doesn't believe him and her boss tells her to drop it and concentrate on more important cases. Helen consults the anesthetist from her own recent operation and he is certain she could not have administered the high levels of chloroform found in her system on her own and someone else had to be involved. Her focus is on the dead woman's husband Philip who was at a hotel that night at a meeting with fellow pharmacists. When a local drug addict - who may or may not have seen Philip at home the night his wife died - is found dead by Helen's boyfriend Chief Supt. Bailey, he suspects Kim's husband DC Duncan Perry. Philip has his own plans for Kim however.
Season 1, Episode 2: Shadow Play
Original Air Date-13 May 2002
Mr. Lycett is obsessed with the daughter he 'lost' many years before when his wife and child left him without warning. As a result he tends to follow young girls who resemble her leading to numerous arrests for lewd behavior. He's always represented himself in court and he's always managed to get the case thrown out. Helen West prosecuted him in the most recent charge but his breaking into tears led the judge to dismiss the case. He's something of a pariah in the community but gets along quite well with his neighbor Margaret Mellors. When he learns that Margaret knew where his wife and daughter went to, he makes her pay. Meanwhile, Helen's boss asks her to have a chat with her clerk Rose Darvey, who seems to be sleeping her way through the most recent class of police cadets. Helen isn't quite comfortable with the requests and feels that Rose's private life is none of her business. Helen is far more concerned with the files that seem to be going missing at the office. In any event, Helen is having her own relationship problems with Bailey and is being pursued by her colleague, Dinsdale Cotton.
Season 1, Episode 3: A Clear Conscience
Original Air Date-20 May 2002
Helen West is somewhat frustrated at work with her boss' attitude to the battered women's cases she has been prosecuting. Often the women are afraid to appear and he feels cases should be dropped in they are no-shows. Chief Supt. Bailey meanwhile isn't satisfied that the man they have in custody for killing former professional boxer Damian Flood is really the killer. Flood was beaten by a trio of young lads he had just fleeced at the pool table and his brother-in-law Joe Boyce, married to his sister Cath, witnessed the assault. Bailey thinks Joe may have had something to do with it. Cath has just started working as a house cleaner for Helen who soon realizes that Joe is beating her. Cath moves into her dead brother's flat but an attempt at a reconciliation with Joe goes terribly wrong. Meanwhile, Helen and Bailey's relationship takes an interesting turn.

Helen West is a crown prosecutor who cares about people in the criminal justice system and seeks to ensure that justice is done. She has a particular interest in women's issues and has to put up with her somewhat odd superior and his cleanliness phobia. She recognizes that it's the role of the police to find the evidence but also feels it warranted to occasionally investigate matters herself. Unmarried, she is also in a relationship with Chief Supt. Bailey, though neither seem to be able to make up their minds about their futures or what they want to get out of life.
