Synopsis:
Set in 1930s Salford during the Great Depression, Love on the Dole follows Harry Hardcastle (Geoffrey Hibbert, In Which We Serve) and Sally (Deborah Kerr, The Innocents), two young siblings who fall prey to poverty and mass unemployment, and must make terrible sacrifices in order to survive. Although its stark portrayal of social deprivation led the British Board of Film Censors to ban the film as a 'very sordid story in very sordid surroundings'. Love on the Dole nonetheless retains an optimistic spirit, reinforcing the ideal that Britain's working classes could face any hardship. Through its impassioned performances, it shows faith in the values of liberal democracy which Britain upheld throughout the war, and looks forward to a better future.

In industrialised 1930s North-West England the Hardcastle family along with the rest of the village struggle to make ends meet. Son Harry has some luck on the horses which helps for a while but as the Depression deepens neither he nor his father can find work. When Harry leaves home to be with his pregnant girlfriend, pressure mounts on attractive daughter Sally to solve the family's problems as best she can.

During the depression in England, a young lady from Lancashire decides to be a rich bookmaker's mistress, just to help the rest of her family who are unemployed.
