Synopsis:
Rather than return directly to Australia, following an unsuccessful trip to London in search of the father she has never known, Kat changes her ticket home to fly via Bangkok, but a fateful meeting takes place at the airline office. She meets Arkie Ragan, a devastatingly charming man under whose spell she instantly falls. An idyllic week follows, recorded by the camera that Arkie has given her as a gift. They return to Bangkok in another fruitless attempt to find Kat's father, but at the airport as they plan to fly home to Australia, 8 kilos of heroin is discovered in the false bottom of the camera case. Katrina is immediately arrested, as Arkie disappears without trace. Despite declaring her innocence Katrina is imprisoned in the Bangkok Hilton, a notorious prison where she has to fight to survive while awaiting trial.
But fate is about to take a hand and Kat discovers the only one ready to help her escape death in the Bangkok Hilton may be the father she has so desperately sought to find.

In one of her first adult starring roles, Nicole Kidman played the lead in the Australian miniseries Bangkok Hilton. Searching for her long-estranged father at Bangkok airport, Katrina 'Kat' Stanton unwittingly becomes a 'mule' for drug-smuggler Arkie Ragan (Jerome Ehlers). Captured by the authorities, Kat is charged with smuggling and locked away in a horrible prison known as the Bangkok Hilton. Also in the cast were Denholm Elliot(Hal Stanton) and such familiar Australian film and TV regulars as Norman Kaye, Joy Smithers, and Gerda Nicholson. After its original ABC network run from November 5-7, 1989, Bangkok Hilton was rebroadcast in six one-hour segments, rather than its original three two-hour episodes. As for Nicole Kidman, she earned an AFI award (the Australian equivalent of the Emmy) for her brilliant and harrowing performance.

Bangkok Hilton is the story of Kat Stanton, an Australian woman searching for her father who, whilst travelling back from London to Australia via Thailand. Kat is tricked into carrying some luggage through Thai customs, only for the police to find drugs in her bag. Kat is sentenced to spend time in the horrific "Bangkok Hilton" prison. Whilst she endures the terrible conditions inside, Kat's lawyer Richard Carlisle and ex-patriot Hal Stanton battle with the authorities to have her freed.
