Jesus' Family Tree (2005)
Jesus, the single child of a nuclear family; his parents, Mary and Joseph. That is the traditional image. But a moment's thought will dispel such an image. Jesus lived 2000 years ago, in a society in which the extended family, and not the nuclear family, was the norm. At any rate, many people believe that Jesus' relatives were mostly in the background, playing little part in the fate of Jesus and the faith he founded. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. The evidence from both the gospels and history and archaeology reveal that Jesus not only had a vast family network, but that network inspired and supported him from childhood to death. Jesus' Family Tree chronicles the practical, and moral, backing of a vast extended family: from his parents, Joseph and Mary, to his grandfather, Joachim, his cousin, John the Baptist, and his brothers, Simon, Jude, Joseph and James.
The Miracles of Jesus (2006)
He was born of a virgin. He fed a multitude of 5,000 with a few loaves and fish. He walked on water, healed the sick and most incredibly, he physically rose from the dead. So who was Jesus? Was he really a miracle maker? What did the miracles mean to the people of First Century Palestine? And what are we to make of them today? Through powerful, emotive drama, CGI, the latest scientific and historical evidence and compelling debate, The Miracles of Jesus aims to revolutionise our understanding of Jesus, bringing to life the unforgettable miracle stories, the Nativity and Holy Week. The series is rooted in ancient Palestine, where viewers see the impact of Jesus' miracles on the Jewish people and share their confusion, as they strive to make sense of who Jesus was, during his lifetime and after the Resurrection.
Moses (2002)
The Old Testament book of Exodus tells the story of Moses leading the Hebrews out of Egypt. This documentary explores this exodus and Moses to find proof that he really did exist. Records found in Egypt, recent scientific discoveries, and research propose that he did live. Learn how a distant volcano and flooding of the Nile could be related to the ten plagues and the parting of the Red Sea.
Noah's Ark (2004)
It's part of everyone's childhood and one of the greatest myths of all but did it really happen? This BBC programme, Noah's Ark - The Real Story, puts some extraordinary claims about Noah, his Ark and the Great Flood to the test, using CGI to build a clear picture of the historical Noah and the dramatic events that inspired the story of the Ark and the Flood. New archaeological discoveries suggest that the biblical story was based on a real event: there was indeed a massive flood in Mesopotamia in 3000BC. Noah himself, though, was far from the man the Bible says he was.
Mary Magdelene (2004)
Who was the real Mary Magdalene? We remember her as a prostitute, forgiven by Jesus. We are told that she washed his feet with her tears and dried them with her hair. For centuries she has been known as the repentant sinner. In art, she has been immortalised as a semi-naked penitent, or an isolated hermit in the wilderness: an outcast. But now there is evidence that the true face of Mary been disfigured over time. Long-lost texts from the early Christian era offer an entirely different picture of Mary Magdalene; they show her as a leader in the early Church, and, according to some experts, possibly even the founder of Christianity itself. Mary Magdalene's story is intimately linked with Jesus. She plays a starring role in one of the most powerful and important scenes in the New Testament. When Jesus is crucified by the Romans, Mary Magdalene is there at the foot of the cross, supporting him in his final terrifying moments and mourning his death. Mary Magdalene also discovers Jesus' empty tomb, and she's a witness to his resurrection. She meets all the criteria of an Apostle, but it's a status she has never been given. The picture that the Bible presents of her is as a loyal supporter. In the Gospel of Luke, Mary follows Jesus after he casts seven demons out of her, which implies that she was possessed. Other than this, we know nothing about her. The only clue is in her name, which suggests that she was from Magdala - a fishing town on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. But Mary's real importance emerges in ancient texts that were buried in the Egyptian desert for hundreds of years and only came to light by accident. These books, from the early Christian era, are known as apocryphal because they offer hidden, secret knowledge about Jesus and his teachings. None of them were included in the Bible, and many Church authorities view them as unacceptable. However, in many of them Mary Magdalene appears as one of Jesus' disciples - just like his male followers. And in one of these books, the Gospel of Philip, she is portrayed as Jesus' closest companion and his spiritual partner. This portrayal of Mary is in sharp contrast with the conventional view of her, as a sinner. But another long-lost text goes even further. 100 years ago a document was discovered in mysterious circumstances; it turned out to be the Gospel of Mary. This Gospel tells a surprising story: Mary Magdalene is the voice of Jesus' teachings after his death. She's represented as the apostle to the apostles. But Peter challenges her, and questions her authority to speak for Jesus, as she is a woman. In effect, Peter and Mary are rivals for the leadership of the group. This rivalry came to represent differences within early Christian communities, and it was a conflict in which Mary's reputation was the loser. In the growing religion, female leadership became unorthodox, so the Church had to find a new role for Mary. She became deliberately confused with other 'Mary's' in the Bible, and the unnamed sinner. In this way, Mary the prostitute and repentant sinner was born - an image that has dogged her for the past 1,500 years. But the Bible, in fact, never names her as a prostitute. The campaign against Mary Magdalene goes back so many centuries it's hard to construct the truth. But perhaps one day she will be recognised for what she really was - an extraordinary woman and one of the founders of the Christian faith.
