Synopsis:
Respected pioneer of Australian cinema, filmmaker Charles Chauvel established a name and reputation for quintessential Aussie storytelling in an era where Hollywood films abound. His distinguished output is represented here in the most comprehensive collection of his work ever put together, featuring: The Moth of Moonbi (1926), Greenhide (1926), In The Wake of The Bounty (1933), Heritage (1935), Uncivilised (1937), Forty Thousand Horsemen (1940), The Rats of Tobruk (1944), The Sons of Matthew (AKA The Rugged O'Riordans) (1950) and, possibly his most famous film, Jedda (1955).

The Moth of Moonbi (1926)
Dell Ferris is a tomboy from the country town of Moonbi who is loved by English head stockman Tom. She goes to the city where sophisticated Margery Daw helps Dell spend her money in high society. Dell returns to Moonbi poorer but wiser and marries Tom.
Greenhide (1926)
High society girl Marjory Paton (Elsa Chauvel) leaves the city to live on her father's cattle property, run by "Greenhide Gavin" (Bruce Gordon). She carries romantic notions of the bush, of "being swung to the saddle by big brown arms", but Greenhide Gavin is initially only annoyed by her presence. Greenhide contains a blossoming romance, and the thwarting of a plot to steal cattle.
In the Wake of the Bounty (1933)
Sailors travel to an island after a mutiny against the ship's captain (Mayne Lynton).
Heritage (1935)
In colonial Australia, James Morrison is a young teamster who has two friends, Long and Short. He is betrothed to Jane Judd when he visits Sydney and meets fiery Irish girl Biddy O'Shea, who is just off the "wife ship" - a boatload of women from an Irish orphanage bought out to Australia. James is attracted to Biddy and promises to marry her. James returns to Bathurst to break the news to Jane, but his mother dies and makes James promise to marry her daughter. He feels obliged to honour his old commitment to Jane...
Uncivilized (1937)
A white authoress, looking for a story in the outback, is kidnapped by an Afghan slaver, betrothed to a white jungle-man, and menaced by a jealous half-caste rival, a hostile witch-doctor, his crazed-killer son, and opium smugglers!
40,000 Horsemen (1940)
Three young Australians join the army at the beginning of World War I and are assigned to the Australian Light Horse cavalry, which is serving in Palestine. The three eventually take part in the attack during the Battle of Beersheba, which was the last cavalry charge in modern warfare.
The Fighting Rats of Tobruk (1944)
Tells the story of three men--Bluey, a tough two fisted drover (Taylor), Milo, a laconic dingo trapper (Rafferty), and Pete, an intellectual English "new chum" (Finch). Together they serve in North Africa, fighting against the forces of Rommel in what has now become one of Australia's greatest wartime legends--The Rats of Tobruk.
The Rugged O'Riordans (1950)
The story of five brothers who homestead, with other settlers, on the virgin plateaus of the Australian bush country. In addition to being beset with the obstacles and difficulties with the land and nature, another complication arises when two of the brothers fall in love with the same woman.
Jedda the Uncivilized (1955)
Set against the harsh natural surrounds of outback Northern Territory, Jedda captures a rare and honest glimpse into the heart and history of indigenous Australia. Young Jedda is caught between two cultures forbidden from learning about her indigenous heritage and never fully accepted by the other.

With collaborator and wife Elsa by his side, respected pioneer of Australian cinema, filmmaker Charles Chauvel established a name and reputation for quintessential Aussie storytelling in an era where Hollywood films abound. His distinguished output is represented here in the most comprehensive collection of his work ever put together.
