Synopsis:
Based on a true story, David Mamet's brilliant adaptation of 'The Winslow Boy' is a rich and complex telling of the British classic, brought to life by a tremendous ensemble of talent including Sir Nigel Hawthorne and Jeremy Northam. Set at the turn of the century, the story follows the lives of the Winslow Family and their fight to prove the innocence of their youngest son, a thirteen-year-old naval cadet who has been expelled from the Academy for stealing a five-shilling postal note. When Sir Robert Morton, a well-respected lawyer, agrees to represent the boy, the case becomes a national spectacle and threatens to destroy the family's bond. But even as the legal circus engulfs the Winslow's lives, self discovery and blossoming romance emerge in this period masterpiece filled with hope wit and humanity.

Early 20th century England: while toasting his daughter Catherine's engagement, Arthur Winslow learns the royal naval academy expelled his 14-year-old son, Ronnie, for stealing five shillings. Father asks son if it is true; when the lad denies it, Arthur risks fortune, health, domestic peace, and Catherine's prospects to pursue justice. After defeat in the military court of appeals, Arthur and Catherine go to Sir Robert Morton, a brilliant, cool barrister and M.P., who examines Ronnie and suggests that they take the matter before Parliament to seek permission to sue the Crown. They do, which keeps Ronnie's story on the front page and keeps Catherine in Sir Robert's ken.

Based on real life events in 1912 England, this exquisitely crafted film tells of Ronnie Winslow, a 13-year-old navel cadel expelled from the Academy for stealing a five-shilling postal note, and his father, London Banker Arthur Winslow's (Nigel Hawthorne), all-consuming attempt to prove his innocence. When Arthur enlists famed barrister Sir Robert Morton (Jeremy Northam), the case is taken to court where a mysterious and surprising chain of events are unravelled, turning the matter into a national obsession. As the strain on the Winslow family threatens its downfall, both emotionally and financially, the entire country stood transfixed for a verdict.
