Synopsis:
Refugee is a social drama, similar to the work of the Dardenne brothers and Ken Loach. Seven-year-old Matias is at his friend's birthday party. The celebration finishes and nobody has picked Matias up. The mother of one of his friends takes him home where it becomes clear that Laura, Matias' mother, has been a victim of domestic violence for a long time. Laura and her son move to a shelter. Unlike his mother, Matias adapts soon. The dynamic camera, the use of space outside the shot, and utilisation of natural light truly enhance the viewing experience. Diego Lerman's fourth feature film was screened at IFF Cannes and won the Silver Hugo at IFF Chicago.

Seven-year-old Matias comes home from a party and finds his mother lying in a pile of broken glass. After helping her to the hospital, they take shelter in a women's refuge and have to live on the run from Mati's abusive father.
