Synopsis:
The president himself calls Professor Mary Ashley to become ambassador of the United States in the communist Romania under Ionescu(Ceausescu). He wants her to introduce a new political line. The time she accepts, she doesn't know how much resistance she'll meet... already before the leaves, her husband is killed in a suspicious car accident. Arrived in Romania, she has not only trouble being accepted as a woman and newcomer in politics, but also gets herself into a life-threatening situation.

Windmills of the Gods was adapted for television by John Gay from a best-selling novel by Sidney Sheldon. Jaclyn Smith plays an American college professor, appointed US ambassador to Romania. While attending a peace conference, Jaclyn's life is placed in jeopardy by an all-powerful secret organization. Whom can she trust: American president Michael Moriarty, Rumanian top dog Franco Nero, fellow scholar David Ackroyd, or confrence chairman Ian McKellan? Or none of the above? This wide-ranging romantic adventure was lensed in several exotic locales, from Bucharest to Chile. Originally presented in two parts, Windmills of the Gods debuted February 7, 1988, directly opposite the ratings-busting TV-movie Elvis and Me.

When Mary Ashley is aproached to become ambassador of the United States of America in Rumania she does not take the offer because her husband does not want to give up his well-going doctor's office. Shortly afterwards Dr. Edward Ashley gets killed in a car accident. After this Mary Ashley reconsiders the offer and finally accepts. Arrived in Rumania she is confronted with a complex plot in which the American President's current plans to improve relations between the US and communist countries shall be sabotaged.
