Synopsis:
It was a time when blonde bombshells splashed Life magazine covers and A-bomb tests mushroomed in the desert. The older generation believed in their government, while younger people protested against it. And Blue Sky captures it all. The final movie directed by British film-maker Tony Richardson (Tom Jones, The Loneliness Of The Long Distance Runner, A Taste Of Honey, The Charge Of The Light Brigade) features powerful performances by Jessica Lange (in an Oscar-winning role) and Tommy Lee Jones. Hard-working, mild-tempered Army scientist Hank Marshall (Jones) has his hands full with explosive nuclear reactors and the equally volatile Carly (Lange), his spirited and emotionally vulnerable wife. While he's conducting tests in Nevada, she succumbs to the advances of his superior officer (Powers Boothe). But her infidelity is not the only dilemma the Marshalls have to face. When a deadly military cover-up puts Hank in jeopardy, it's up to Carly to muster the courage and strength to save the man she loves...

Set in 1962. Hank Marshall, an Army scientist lives on Paradise Island on an army base with his wife Carly, and their two daughters. Marshall is involved in studying the effects of nuclear fallout and becomes anti-nuclear after his transferral to the "Blue Sky" project in Nevada. In his personal life, Hank has to contend with his unstable and flirtatious wife. The Army persuades Carly to collude in getting Hank committed to a psychiatric hospital when they want to keep him quiet about victims of nuclear fallout. Carly regrets her action and decides to expose the "Blue Sky" project to the media in order to secure Hank's release...

Hank Marshall is a tough, square-jawed, straitlaced Army engineer and nuclear science expert, assigned to help conduct weapons-testing in 1950's America. Hank has become a thorn in the side of the Army, though, for a couple of very different reasons. He is an outspoken opponent of atmospheric testing, though his superiors hold contrary views and want to squelch his concerns...and his reports. The other problem is his wife, Carly. She is voluptuous and volatile, wreaking havoc in his personal life and stirring up intrigue at each new Army base.
