Synopsis:
Humphrey Bogart stars in this improbable tale that marked Gene Tierney's return to the screen after battling mental illness for a number of years. Bogart plays Jim Carmody, an American soldier of fortune who, after crashing his plane in China, takes up with the Chinese warlord General Yang (Lee J. Cobb). Jim becomes Yang's advisor, but after watching one of the General's flunkies brutally kill a priest, Jim decides to leave. Unfortunately, Yang has declared that any deserter will be shot. Disguising himself as the slain priest, Jim sneaks out of the General's headquarters and makes his way to a mountain village where missionaries Beryl (Agnes Moorehead) and David (E.G. Marshall) take him in. Jim still is posing as the priest but his vows of celibacy are challenged when he falls in love with the attractive mission nurse Anne Scott (Gene Tierney). Anne feels ashamed because she is also attracted to him, but Jim writes to the bishop confessing that he is an impostor. At that moment, General Yang arrives, insisting that Jim rejoin his army or else he will burn down the village.

A remote province in China 1947. Story of an American pilot who crash-landed in China during the Second World War and who joined forces with the Chinese Warlord Yang who saved him. During a raid Yang's bandits kill a priest and already fed up with being forced to work for Yang Carmody sees his chance to escape. He takes on the identity of the priest and heads for St Mary's Mission. Nurse Anne Scott is attracted to him, but tries to suppress her feelings believing him to be a priest. Carmody actually starts to act like a priest, and on the advice of a Methodist minister in whom he confides, he writes confessing everything to the Bishop. When Yang catches up with him he protects those in the Mission and gambles successfully with Yang, gaining both his own freedom and the safety of the Mission. Although he has done wrong, his "ministry" has been to the good. With everything in the open he and Anne can follow their true feelings.

A man in priestly robes, seemingly the long-awaited Father O'Shea, arrives at a little-frequented Catholic mission in 1947 China. Though the man seems curiously uncomfortable with his priestly duties, his tough tactics prove very successful in the Seven Villages, as around them China disintegrates in civil war and revolution. But he has a secret, and his friendship with mission nurse Anne (an attractive war widow) seems to be taking on an unpriestly tone...
