Synopsis:
A young couple. Matt (Kyle MacLachlan) and Annie (Elisabeth Shue), are inexorably drawn into increasing lawlessness when a long lasting power failure plunges an entire city into anarchy.
After a volatile evening at the movies, the couple arrive home to find that their daughter has an infection, but when the blackout hits Matt struggles to get help for his child. Matters worsen when Joe, an old friend, pays the couple a surprise visit during the power outrage. Soon, Joe's brazen working class attitude and increasing alcohol consumption heightens tensions as the city shuts down and a looter breaks into their home. Fleeing for other, safer, parts of the country, the group faces strangers, distrust, fear, and ultimately their own humanity. This suspense thriller by writer-director David Koepp(the writer of Spider man and Mission Impossible) is a chilling journey into an apocalyptic nightmare.

How tenuous is man's hold on civilization when survival becomes an issue? When the lights go out and stay out for several days, suburbanites Matthew and Annie learn the hard way that man is 'by nature' a predatory creature. Matthew's long-time friend, Joe, happens by on the second day and a rivalry between the two friends simmers as Annie cares for her sick baby. When rumors of looting spread through the neighborhood, the two men buy a rifle for protection but Annie throws it in the pool. Later, that same night, Joe hears a prowler downstairs and awakens Matthew. They chase the stranger from the house and out into the street where a neighbor shoots him to death. No longer safe in their own home, they decide to drive to Annie's parents some 500 miles away. Before they reach their destination, more trouble comes their way when they stop to siphon gas from an abandoned car and discover the driver in the back seat... Is this what is meant by 'man's inhumanity to man?'

Returning to their suburban home, Matt and Annie discover that their infant daughter has an ear infection. Matt calls the pediatrician who says he'll phone in a prescription, but during the night there is a power failure. With the phones dead, the pharmacist hasn't received the prescription and won't give Matt the medicine. Spurred on by the increasing lawlessness, Matt steals the penicillin his daughter needs. Joe, Matt's old friend, visits the couple and brings rumors about 'looting and shooting' in town. Joe's presence triggers tensions between the two men. The relationship between the three of them suffers further after a confrontation with a prowler turns violent. They decide to flee the city. On a roadside diner they cross paths with Gary and Raymond. An event occurs in which the lives of Annie, Matt and Joe ricochet off those of Gary and Raymond. Lives hang in the balance as a test of wills turns into a test of faith.
