Synopsis:
A change of pace for both director Vincente Minnelli and star Katharine Hepburn, this taut drama features the latter as Ann Hamilton, the daughter of a scientist (Edmund Gwenn), who after a whirlwind romance marries handsome but slightly mysterious inventor turned businessman Alan Garroway (Robert Taylor). But wedded bliss proves short-lived when Garroway refuses to discuss his brother Michael, whose presence is felt constantly despite the mystery surrounding his whereabouts. The missing Michael becomes an obsession for Ann, whose curiosity is piqued even more after a chance encounter with Sylvia Burton (Jayne Meadows), a young woman who figures in the lives of both brothers and who displays a strange resemblance to Ann herself. Despite Alan's dire misgivings, Ann feels compelled to solve the mystery of Michael, until, that is, she discovers that Alan may very well have murdered his own brother.

Life is good for Ann Hamilton (Katharine Hepburn), living with her popular scientist father and poised to become a spinster scientist herself, until one fateful night she meets the inventor Alan Garroway (Robert Taylor) whose distance controller has revolutionized the aeronautics industry. Alan woos Ann and they marry in a whirlwind affair with Alan whisking Ann away to Washington to live. In Washington Ann realizes that she knows little of Alans past, particularly his emotionally charged relationship to his brother Michael (Robert Mitchum), rumored to have bankrupted the company Alan and he had created. Michael is missing and has been absent for years with speculation by many that some dark activity may be connected to his disappearance. When people keep mentioning Michael to Ann she asks Alan and every time Alan responds with drama, at one point verbally abusing Ann for her interest in the brother. When Michael appears lat one night to confront Alan about how he obtained his original plans and patent for the long-distance regulator that has made him a millionaire, Alan plans a method of revenge that includes another murder.

Ann Hamilton (Hepburn) is a middle-aged bride who begins to suspect that her charming husband Alan Garroway (Taylor) plans to murder her. Nor can she ignore the shadow of her brother-in-law Michael Garroway (Robert Mitchum), whom she's never met but has been told so much about.
