Synopsis:
On the outskirts of Paris, an armoured car containing a fortune in jewellery is hijacked by a band of armed crooks. Once he has delivered the stolen goods to his wealthy client, the leader of the gang, Quinquin, immediately sets about eliminating all of his accomplices - including Gouvion, the police inspector responsible for the safe conduct of the jewels. When he learns of Gouvion's death, Commissioner Joss decides to take charge of the investigation, even though he is only a few months from retirement. With the help of Gouvion's former mistress, Nathalie, Joss is prepared to use whatever means necessary to bring Quinquin to account...

Six months before his retirement from the criminal police, inspector Joss finds his colleague Gouvion dead, in a poorly faked suicide attempt. Joss loses his temper, and investigates on his own, which leads him through the bas-fond of Paris...

If there is a French film policier which evokes the revolutionary spirit of 1968 it has to be Le Pacha, a police-procedural suspense thriller which broke the mould in more ways than one and paved the way for the tougher, more action-oriented French thrillers of the following decade.
