Synopsis:

The combined star-power of two of cinema's 'greats' - RICHARD BURTON and SOPHIA LOREN - illuminates this update of one of the most poignant cinematic love stories of all time. BRIEF ENCOUNTER is Noel Coward's classic tale of a doomed romance. When unhappily married doctor Alec Harvey removes a piece of grit from the eye of fellow train-traveller Anna Jesson, little do they suspect that this chance encounter will turn into a passionate relationship. Alec relentlessly pursues Anna, but she is tormented by guilt as the fantasy dream becomes a nightmare of deceit and she realizes she is betraying both her husband and her children.

Ignoring the old adage 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it', producer Carlo Ponti assembled a TV remake of the well-nigh-perfect 1945 British film Brief Encounter. Sophia Loren (Mrs. Ponti) stars as a bored married woman who embarks upon a brief romantic fling with equally married Richard Burton. Throughout their relationship, Loren and Burton are plagued by guilt; ultimately, they sacrifice their potential happiness in favor of 'the right thing.' Based on the 1936 Noel Coward playlet Still Life, the TV version Brief Encounter robs the original of its poignancy; instead, we are left with two very pretty movie stars going through the motions. The video Brief Encounter debuted amidst a blitz of publicity hoopla on November 11, 1974.

Two strangers, both married to others, meet in a railroad station and find themselves in a brief but intense affair.
