Synopsis:
Slavery has always existed, up to the present day, but the slave trade in the colonial period was distinguished by its almost industrial character. Roué Verveer and Daphne Bunskoek go in search of the most concealed part of our national history: the Dutch share in international slavery. Episode 1: A world full of slaves Roué will investigate from which African country his ancestors originate and were shipped to Suriname and even conducts DNA research in the US. Daphne travels through Morocco and tells the story of the white Christian slaves traded by North African privateers. A great-great-nephew of Gerrit Met Zon, a Dutch Christian slave, reads from the diary that his great-uncle wrote as a slave. Episode 2: Dutch guns, African tears The slave trade brought the Dutch to the coast of West Africa. There they bought hundreds of thousands of slaves to transport them to America in sailing ships. How did the West India Company (WIC) get those slaves and who were they? Episode 3: A slave does not get to heaven With the holds crammed with men, women and children, Dutch ships crossed the ocean on their way to the New World. In all, 12,500,000 Africans were transported as slaves to "the Americas" by colonials. The Netherlands accounted for 600,000 of this. Episode 4: Industry in the tropics The African slaves are put to work in Suriname and grow products for the European market on plantations. Despite the oppression, there is a precarious balance between the slaves and their owners, and slaves and masters develop some form of living together. Episode 5: Chains of the Mind: The black resistance is spreading in the Caribbean and slaves in Curaçao revolt. In 1863, the Netherlands abolished slavery in the West Indies colonies but are the former slaves really free or does the slavery past continue to this day?
