Synopsis:

The Romantics, seven close friends-all members of a tight, eclectic college clique-reconvene at a deluxe seaside wedding to watch two of their own tie the knot. Lila is the golden girl preparing for her dream wedding, and Laura is Lila's maid of honor. Once college roommates, Laura and Lila have been best friends since their first meeting on campus, but Lila's groom, Tom, is the man they have long rivaled over. Promiscuity and hi-jinks abound as the drunken friends frolic in the nearby surf and revel in the nostalgic haze of their glory days. Producer-turned-director Galt Niederhoffer adapts her own novel of the same name in this audacious first feature. With an outstanding ensemble cast, The Romantics is both a Zeitgeist love story and generational comedy that breathes new life into the genre and recaptures the camaraderie of youth.

Another wedding movie, another 90-plus minutes of half-baked suspense wondering whether the bride- and groom-to-be will go through with the ceremony or back out at the last second. There you have the outline of 'The Romantics," a formulaic rom-com with an Ivy League pedigree and a higher-than-average SAT verbal score. The golden couple whose imminent nuptials are about to be celebrated at a waterside estate are Lila (a miscast Anna Paquin), a brusque, staunchly upbeat blonde, and Tom (Josh Duhamel), a handsome scholar and athlete whose self-assurance conceals an ambivalence bordering on panic. Lila and Tom are the center of a clique of seven Harvard friends who reconvene for the wedding rehearsal and dinner, at which they get plastered and say and do indiscreet things. As the wedding-eve festivities become more raucous, the groom goes for a swim and disappears, and the guests break up into tipsy search parties.

Friends and family convene at a beach house for the wedding of Lila and Tom. But things don't go swimmingly, mainly because of one thing that Lila and her maid of honor, Laura, have in common - Tom, the groom. Laura and Tom were an item before Lila came along and nobody seems able to forget that. With very few successful marriages to look up to, and friends that she's not sure she can trust, will Lila be able to go through with the wedding?
