Synopsis:
Macário spends an entire train journey to the Algarve talking to a woman he does not know about the trials and tribulations of his love life: straight after starting his first job he falls madly in love with a young blonde, who lives across the road. No sooner does he meet her than he wants to marry her. His uncle, totally opposed to the match, kicks him out of the house and Macário departs for Cape Verde where he makes his fortune. When he finally wins his uncle's approval to marry his beloved, he discovers the "singularity" of his fiancée's character.

On a train to the Algarve, Macário tells his story to a sympathetic woman he's just met. In flashbacks he arrives in Lisbon to work as an accountant and a broker for his uncle. From his office window, he sees a young woman, Luísa: he's intrigued and finds her beautiful; she holds a Chinese fan near her face. He arranges to meet her, and they fall in love. When he tells his uncle he wants to marry, not only does his uncle disapprove, he fires Macário who then leaves his uncle's home to live on his own. Penniless, he takes a job in Cape Verde to earn some money so Luísa and he can wed. Will she wait, and what of her peculiarities? His seatmate on the train wants the whole story.

In 'Eccentricities of a Blond Hair Girl," the Portuguese filmmaker Manoel de Oliveira's exquisite but peculiar screen adaptation of a short story by E?de Queiros, everything changes yet remains the same. All is illusion and beyond human understanding, and memory is not to be trusted in a film that takes a long view that encompasses generations. An excerpt from 'The Keeper of Sheep," a 1914 poem by the Portuguese writer Fernando Pessoa that is recited in the movie, distills the perspective of Mr. de Oliveira, who at the age of 101 should know something about farsightedness.
