Synopsis:

The top espionage agents of Russia Red China Israel Great Britain and the U.S. will do anything - repeat-anything - to catch the Salzburg Connection. American lawyer William Mathison (Barry Newman Vanishing Point) is vacationing in Switzerland when he is asked by an American publishing firm to go to Salzburg Austria to contact a photographer who has written a book about Austrian lakes. Mathison immediately realises that something is amiss when he reaches the photographer's small shop and finds him missing his wife Anna (Anna Karina Alphaville) frantic. It soon becomes apparent that the photographer has been murdered having found a chest at the bottom of a lake containing a list of Nazi collaborators from WWII. With the list now in their possession Mathison and Anna find themselves being hunted both by those whose names appear on the list and by members of the international intelligence community wishing to use the list as a another bargaining chip in The Great Game of international espionage.

An American lawyer on vacation in Europe is asked by a book publisher to stop by the Austrian town of Salzburg to see a photographer who's taking pictures for a book on picturesque Austrian lakes. Upon his arrival he senses that something is wrong when the photographer seems to have vanished, leaving a near panic-stricken wife and a sinister, secretive brother. Before he knows it, the lawyer finds himself mixed up with spies, assassins, and the hunt for a list made up by the Nazis during World War II of people who collaborated with them.

This espionage thriller is based on a spy novel by Helen MacInnes and tells the tale of a Yankee lawyer who goes to the lovely little Austrian city on vacation and ends up hopelessly entangled in an international web of rival spies and neo-Nazis searching for a chest that holds the names of Nazi collaborators and war criminals.
