Synopsis:

In an American West just coming to terms with the end of World War II, Jane Fonda stars as a Colorado rancher struggling to keep her independence from ruthless local land mogul Ewing. Fonda teams up with another independent rancher and war veteran, Frank and Frank's partner is killed. Frank and Ella develop a romantic relationship as they battle to save Ella's land, but more than the land is at stake for Ewing. His desire to expand his ranching empire must come to terms with a force even more powerful than his own ambition, oil companies interested in taking over the ranch-land for drilling... Gordon Willis's cinematography of the Wet Mountain Valley in Colorado is breathtaking, becoming the secret star of the picture. The film includes a delightful performance by Richard Farnsworth as Dodger, an older local who is close to both Ella and the land....

Old man Ewing (Jason Robards) owns a ranch right next to the ranch of Ella (Jane Fonda). This is a source of two problems: Ewing wants to gobble up most of the land around the two ranches and also wants Ella's ranch; secondly, when Ella was too young to know better, she went to bed with the man, which, many years later, she considers to have been a grievous error on her part. A third problem arises when oil companies begin pressuring both of them to allow drilling on their land, and Ewing won't allow it -- on his or anyone else's land. Before long, war-veteran Frank (James Caan) enters Ella's life and helps her fight to save her land and her sanity, with added assistance from Dodger (Richard Farnsworth), an old local who knows the score.

Ella Connors is a single woman who gets pressured to sell her failing cattle farm to her corrupt ex suitor, Jacob Ewing. She asks for help from her neighbor, Frank Athearn. As Ella and Frank fight back through stampedes, jealousy, betrayal, and sabotage...they eventually find love.
