Synopsis:

F/X (Murder by Illusion) is a 1986 American action-thriller film about Rollie Tyler (Bryan Brown), an expert in the art of special effects (F/X) with a reputation built by his work on many low-budget hack-and-slash films such as I Dismember Mama. The Department of Justice hires him to stage the murder of a gangster about to enter the Witness Protection Program. He agrees, but then things get complicated. Meanwhile, New York City police detective Leo McCarthy (Brian Dennehy) is investigating the faked murder and cannot understand why the Justice Department is even less helpful than usual.

The Justice Department enlists special-effects wizard Rollie Tyler (Bryan Brown) for the most elaborate assignment of his lifetime -- to fake the murder of a high-profile mobster (Jerry Orbach) who's about to enter the witness protection program. But Tyler's hoax turns frighteningly real when he realizes he's been set up for murder. Meanwhile, a New York detective (Brian Dennehy) investigating the crime finds the FBI to be less than helpful.

A movies special effects man is hired by a government agency to help stage the assassination of a well known gangster. When the agency double crosses him, he uses his special effects to trap the gangster and the corrupt agents.
