Synopsis:
The sailors uprising in Kiel in November 1918 began the revolutionary storm that drove the Emperor from power within days. Ships were supposed to be sent out to a last decisive battle with the British Navy, although it was clear that this was a kamikaze operation. The mutiny of several crews turned into an uprising that was joined by the workers of Kiel. It is to this historical backdrop that this DEFA film portrays this battle and the fate of young sailors aboard SMS Friedrich the Great, who prevented the sinking of a Russian freighter in the autumn of 1917 and disarmed their senior officers. This success is not long-lasting there are many further battles on land and on-board that are yet to be fought. A film about life and death at the end of the First World War, about courage, treason and the fight for a better Germany.

It has been 100 years since the start of the First World War. More than 10 million people lost their lives between 1914 and 1918, and twice as many were injured or crippled. The First World War was a significant theme for the film artists of the Deutsche Film-Aktiengesellschaft (DEFA), the East German film company founded in 1946. The suffering of working people, the misery of life in the factories and poor accommodation in cities, the growing organisation of resistance to warmongers and profiteers, as well as the battle for a better world are the topics of this extraordinary collection of films.
