Synopsis:
Great Expectations centres around the character of Pip, an orphaned boy who is raised by his domineering sister, known simply as Mrs Joe, and her good tempered, black-smith husband, Joe. The family is a poor one, living on marshland at the outskirts of a country town. It is in this marshland, that Pip, as a child, discovers the escaped convict, Abel Magwitch, who terrorises Pip into providing food for him. Sometime later, the town's wealthy and eccentric recluse, Miss Havisham, takes an interest in Pip, who employs him to play with her adopted daughter, the cold-hearted Estella. Years pass, and Pip is informed that he has a mysterious wealthy benefactor whose wish is to see Pip become a proper London gentleman. Believing it to be a plan of Miss Havisham's to bring himself and Estella together, Pip moves to London to partake in his great expectations. In the process, however, he forgets those who helped in the first place.

Young Pip is expected to become a blacksmith, but, hating the soot and smoke, he secretly dreams of becoming a gentleman. When he meets the mysterious Miss Havisham and her haughty niece Estella, Pip is confident that his dream is to come true.
