Synopsis:
In Shenandoah, Virginia, the widower farmer Charlie Anderson lives a peaceful life with his six sons - Jacob, James, Nathan, John, Henry and Boy, his daughter Jennie, and his daughter-in-law and James' wife Ann Anderson in his farm. Charlie does not let his sons to join the army to fight in the American Civil War that he considers that it is not their war. Meanwhile Jennie marries to her beloved Lieutenant Sam, but they do not have honeymoon since Sam has to go to the front. When Charlie's youngest son Boy is mistakenly taken prisoner by soldiers from the North. Charlie rides with his sons to rescue Boy, while James and Ann stays in the farm. But it is time of violence and war, and tragedy reaches the Anderson family.

Andrew V. McLaglen's Shenandoah from Universal makes its third appearance in a high-end video format, after two laserdisc editions. Universal's DVD offers some serious volume on the soundtrack - when the cannons go off in the battle scene that follows the credits, your neighbors are likely to know about it, depending upon how one's speakers are set up. The music is mastered in equally impressive fashion -- Frank Skinner's arrangement of the folk tune referred to in the title, complete with trumpets and a horn embellishment, is presented in exquisite detail, as is the gentle orchestral idyll depicting Stewart's youngest son's fishing in the opening, and the rest of the film sounds just as good.

Charlie Anderson is a farmer in Shenandoah, Virginia and finds himself (and his family) in the middle of the Civil War. He decides not to get involved in the war because he believes that this is not 'his' war. But he eventually has to get involved when his youngest boy is taken prisoner by the North.
