Synopsis:
The alpine folk music and the alphorn are often seen as symbols of the tourism vendors, from which a few beautiful but musically limited "rows of cows" can be elicited at best. DAS ALPHORN shows with a lot of humor how heavy the ideological ballast still clings to the tormented instrument and how astonishingly diverse and thrilling its musical possibilities are at the same time. A "young" generation of musicians, particularly from jazz, rock or avant-garde circles, has turned to traditional music. They have interpreted and changed the local folklore according to their own discretion and thus freed it from its museum rigidity - and they have found exciting ways both to stay with the roots and to live out the archaic. Musically, the journey goes from the wild "Büchselsätzli" of Central Switzerland to beautiful traditional alphorn melodies by the contemporary composer Hans-Jürg Sommer, the bombastic sound towers of the group "hornroh" in train stations and motorway underpasses to the modern sound collages of the minimal musician Moondog, who Swiss jazz musician Hans Kennel performs with 16 alphorns.
