Synopsis:
***WARNING: The following films do NOT have English: Wiederkehr, Dieses Jahr in Czernowitz, Livland, Sammelsurium - Ein Ostelbischer Kulturfilm, Die Wismut, Kurische Nehrung***Smorgasbord - An East Elbe cultural film: The title 'Smorgasbord' refers to the fact that the GDR, which has no longer existed since October 1990, can also be viewed as a closed collecting area for coin and stamp fans. What seemed like forever passed by with great speed. The 'eternal' concrete borders and the 'eternal' statues have been demolished, the 'eternal' friendship with the Soviet Union quickly seems to be out of mind - broken eternities. The sunken places can be located. There is also enough film material. And although much will quickly be forgotten, there are still enough people who can report. 'Collection' is the search for clues and archaeology, collecting memorabilia and watching disappearances. The Bismuth: Documentary about the impact of uranium mining in East Germany. Mr. Zwilling and Ms. Zuckermann: Only two Jews who were born in the town of Czernowitz still survive, after the turmoils of the twentieth century, and they are now both in their nineties. Curonian Spit: The 'Kurische Nehrung' is a promontory between the Baltic Sea and the Kaff, whose northern part belongs to Lithuania, while the south is Russian territory. This documentary feature depicts the landscape, the differences between the two countries, the opinions of the people and the German roots some of the inhabitants have. Uckermark: Volker Koepp returns to the Brandenburg Marches, where many of his films were made. Uckermark describes the coexistence of the various eras using the stories and lives of the local people. They are farmers and returning noblemen, men and women hoping that short-term job-creation schemes will lead to meaningful work, a theatre director whom the Uckermark reminds of the past. This Year in Czernowitz: Half of Chernivtsi's once 150,000 inhabitants were Jews. Only a few of them survived the deportation to the camps of Transnistria in 1941. "This year in Chernivtsi" portrays cellist Eduard Weissmann, for example, who sets off from Berlin. Shadow Land - Trip to Masuria: A documentary about Masuria, a province in the northeast of Poland, which is probably the most renowned part of former East-Prussia. Albeit a recent boom in tourism, the sparsely populated region still remains one of the poorest regions in Europe. The impressively photographed film reflects upon the eventful history of this land: It portrays farmers, who struggle to work the barren land; fishermen, who fight for their existence, and Ukrainians, who were once forced to relocate and now return to their old home in the East Pommerland: In his documentary film, Volker Koepp portrays the picturesque Polish region of Pomerania. But although the region appears to be idyllic, its inhabitants are struggling with big problems. The villages and cities of Pomerania that traditionally live from agriculture are hit by unemployment rates of up to 75% after the meltdown of the state farms. While most of the young people leave the region, some of them take their chances and start fresh - for instance, a young couple that tries to rebuild an agricultural farm with the help of EU funding. Furthermore, older inhabitants, including a spry 90-year old retiree from the Uckermark region who grew up in Pomerania, tell stories about the region?s eventful past. Söhne: The sons of Elizabeth Paetzold reveal, little by little, what they have in common. And their story is a real, living history lesson of Pomerania - throughout history inhabited by Kashubians, Germans & Poles. Over twenty years had to pass before their true identities were confirmed. All the sons were born in the Paetzold family country manor - a formerly German area of Pomerania, near Danzig, which became Polish again & definitely-so after mid 1945, just 9 months after the last of the brothers was born. Elizabeth could only take 2 of the children out of the area before the Red Army took over. The other children remained in Polish orphanages, 2 of them adopted by Polish families. During this meeting, what the brothers call their 'last reunion' - the eldest was born in 1938 & the youngest in late 1944, interviews with all the sons, their wives, partner, children, in-laws & neighbors participate, in telling this wonderful family saga, which is the mirror image of post-WWII Pomerania, or even the post WWII Polish-German relationship as a whole. Elder Blossom: The film tells the story of the East Prussian landscape and its inhabitants. At one time Germans, Poles, Lithuanians and Jews lived here alongside and with one another. After World War II and the expulsion of Germans by Stalin, the Prussian province turned into a Russian enclave. Volker Koepp's fourth film about the Kaliningrad region is dedicated to the generation, born in the '90s, and familiar with the Soviet Union and East Prussia only from school books. Parents and grandparents who were forcefully resettled to where they are now have never really felt at home. In the meantime they have hopelessly succumbed to unemployment and alcohol. Their children can only rely on themselves. Older siblings look after the younger ones, they play with what lies around, and the girl Ljuda can't wait to finally turn eighteen, to be able to take her brothers home from the orphanage. The film has much confidence in the children. But what will become of them? Memelland: Director Volker Koepp travels the Lithuanian shore on the border to the Russian enclave. Germans and Lithuanians have always lived here. Berlin-Stettin: The director revisits places of his own past. Born in 1944 in Stettin (now the Polish city of Szczecin) and grown up in Berlin-Karlshorst, he has met and turned numerous people and locations between the two cities into the protagonists of his films. Now, he returns to them to find out more about the history of this region, and how much of his own life has overlapped with the lives of his protagonists. Livland: Volker Koepp continues his documentary journey along the Baltic Sea coast and in "Livland" deals with the landscape of the title, which includes the Baltic countries of Latvia and Estonia. The German director captures the attitude to life of the locals in calm images and lets them expand on their relationship to the landscape in extensive interviews. Koepp pays particular attention to the young Estonians and Latvians who have consciously decided against emigration and are happy to accept economic disadvantages in order to remain rooted in their homeland. Omnipresent is the feeling that the whole of Livonia seems to be experiencing: ready to face globalization and yet worried about threatened traditions. In Sarmatien: Volker Koepp revisits locations and people from his earlier documentaries in the wide Eastern European region of Sarmatia. Landstück: Documentary about the changing tides at the German farmland area bordering Poland. Once part of the GDR, the changes that the government had implemented here are also affecting the local way of life - but is it for the better or worse? Wiederkehr: The film takes you on a journey to the area on both sides of the Memel, which today separates EU Lithuania from the Russian exclave around Kaliningrad/Königsberg. Seestück: Travelling to the island of Usedom, the beaches of Poland, the Baltic coasts, and the northern archipelago of Sweden, the director shows the impressive natural landscapes and the different regions on the Baltic Sea as the home of a wide variety of people. The political conflicts between East and West, regional egoism, and ecological problems are also reflected in the history and the present of the sea.
