Synopsis:
A bored Englishwoman, Elizabeth, on a whim, goes to Baden Baden. She meets a young man, Thomas, a drugdealer, and begins an affair with him. The affair continues even after she returns home to her husband, whom she eventually leaves and travels to the Mediterranean with Thomas. The latter however continues his activities in the drug trade, and as a gigolo. Thomas phones Elizabeth's husband to come and collect her, but the husband is followed by one of Thomas's drug contacts who has been looking for him. Thomas is led away by the drug contact and Elizabeth is taken back home by her husband.

What is real and what is fiction? Faced with writer's block with his novel, Lewis Fielding turns to a film script about a woman finding herself after his wife Elizabeth returns from Baden Baden. She didn't quite find herself there but had a brief encounter in a lift with a German who says he is a poet. Now the German is in England, gets himself invited to tea where he claims he admires Fielding's books. Which one does he like the best? 'Tom Jones.' Amused at being confused with the other Fielding, the novelist works the German into the plot.
