Synopsis:
Hell on Wheels: Every year, the legendary Tour de France race and its participants capture the hearts and minds of a million onlookers all over the world. In Höllentour, Oscar-winning filmmaker Pepe Danquart and co-director Werner Schweizer take a behind-the-scenes ride with the T-Mobile team 2003, whose courage and perseverance make for nail-biting action. Shot on the race's 100th anniversary, the film also tells of the event's fascinating history, how it grew from simple origins to the moneymaker of today. Searching for the truth behind the spectacle, the film takes an emotional rollercoaster with some of the world's elite athletes as they persist through injury, victory, and pain. Overcoming: Profound and penetrating insight into the hermetically closed world of professional cycling. With former pro rider, Tour de France winner Bjarne Riis as the protagonist, the documentary follows him and his new Team CSC as they strive for the impossible: to become the world's best and win the Tour de France. A Sunday in Hell: The film follows the French Paris-Roubaix spring classic, notorious for the hellish paves or cobbled roads of the north 'which are no longer used for traffic but only for transporting cattle - and for cycle races'. We are there from the dawn preparations and rituals on the outskirts of Paris and through the rigours of the race with special focus on a number of prominent cyclists to the final outcome on the Roubaix cycle track - followed by the filthy riders taking their showers. There is also an eye for life among the spectators and the media event as such. The film alternates among different kinds of shot with a view to establishing the most suitable view of the narrative: shots from motorcycles, which are able to convey the motion of the race and provide close ups of the riders in the style of television cycle race reporting; fixed cameras stationed at strategically important points along the route, where viewers can watch riders passing in real time and thus gain a clear overview of the distance between the leaders and the main field: and the Olympian eye of the helicopter shots.

Arguably, and we love an argument, arguably three of the finest films on the subject of cycling are gathered here in the one package. "Hell On Wheels" covers the 2003 edition of the Tour de France from the perspective of Team Telekom, and two of its finest sons, Erik Zabel and Rolf Aldag. "Overcoming" focuses on the now legendary Team CSC through its leaders Ivan Basso, and the much-loved winner of 2008 edition, Carlos Sastre. The year in the film however is 2004, and Lance Armstrong's crown seems to be up for grabs. To round out the package, the first full length documentary of note is 1974's masterwork by Jorgen Leth, "A Sunday In Hell". This film looks closely at the Paris - Roubaix, the one day cycling classic that is a magnet to mad cyclists. These films are made by three talented directors from two key cycling nations - Germany,Denmark, and Denmark again. They offer insights into the technology, to the training, to the psychology - and to something more. There are glimpses into the souls of the cyclists, and into the essence of what makes people take on the brutal toughness of the sport. C'est magnifique!Synopsis - Hell on Wheels: A Tour for Heroes (2004) the 2003 tour de france was the 100th edition, and it was also the most exciting race in years. director, pepe danquart, chose 2003 to document the race through the highs and lows experienced by the deutsche telekom team focussing mainly on cyclists eric zaSynopsis - Overcoming (2005) Overcoming is a frank, no-holds-barred portrait of a world few people can imagine: a world in which even the toughest go under as the team strive to realize their ambition. With the classical narrative form from the world of fiction as our pattern, the roles will step into character one by one: the heroes, the villains, the champions, the rivals, the victims.
