Synopsis:
The Mallens: The series follows a ruthless 19th century Northumberland Squire, Thomas Mallen, and the tumultuous lives of his multiple illegitimate children distinguishable by a white streak in their hair. The Fifteen Streets: In northern England around 1900, the worker John O'Brien lives near poverty in a small house in the worker's district. He falls in love with Mary, the teacher of his highly intelligent younger sister Kathy and daughter of a rich family. Their love is doomed by the social difference, but the vigorous Mary refuses to allow outer circumstances destroying their love. The Man Who Cried: Abel Mason is a man caught in a loveless marriage with a harridan wife who constantly berates him and beats their son Dick. When the one woman he loves dies at the hands of her husband after he was sent a letter by Mason's wife, exposing the affair, Abel leaves her for good taking to the road and young Dick with him. The Cinder Path: Edward MacFell is a prosperous Northumberland farmer with a sadistic bent. He routinely hurts and humiliates family members and workers alike. When he goes too far, he becomes the victim of a murder made to appear an accident. His mild-mannered son Charlie witnesses the crime and protects the killer in the name of friendship and justice. But there is still another witness, Ginger Slater, an embittered farm hand with blackmail on his mind. Charlie is inveigled into a disastrous marriage with Victoria Chapman, the promiscuous county belle, unaware that her sister Nellie is in love with him. Then comes the war. When Charlie tires of his sister's carping and his wife's infidelities, he signs up--as an enlisted man, and finds himself in the charge of a sergeant with an axe to grind: Sgt. Ginger Slater. The Dwelling Place: Set in the 1830s, the film tells the story of 16-year-old Cissie Brodie after the death of her parents and the repossession of the family home. She finds a barren place to live and care for her younger brothers and sisters with the help of local carpenter Matthew, but her life becomes complicated when the aristocratic Fischel family takes an unwelcome interest. The Glass Virgin: Set in 1870s England, the story tells of Annabella Lagrange and the terrible secret her wealthy parents have kept from her. When she finally learns the truth, she runs away and eventually finds solace in the company of her family's former groom, a young Irishman with the very Spanish name of Manuel Mendoza. Together they travel the Northumbria countryside from job to job in his horse and caravan, Annabella trapped in limbo between her upper class upbringing which has rejected her, and the working class who are sometimes suspicious of her, only Manuel understanding her situation. The Gambling Man: A rent collector in Victorian Tyneside tries to better himself. He finds navigating class prejudices and family obstacles difficult. Sometimes criminals oppose him. It seems he'll never succeed, but twists of fate and help from unexpected quarters make it seem as if he'll win through in the end.
