Synopsis:
"The Edgar Wallace Mystery Theatre" Clue of the Twisted Candle: A man is murdered in a room with no windows and a steel lined door which locks only from the inside. "The Edgar Wallace Mystery Theatre" Marriage of Convenience: A young woman going to her wedding is waiting for her fiancée, a hood in custody, who is allowed by the police to go to his wedding. "The Edgar Wallace Mystery Theatre" The Man Who Was Nobody: A slick young man buys a jewel with a cheque that bounces. He then disappears and both the police and a lawyer try to find him. The lawyer hires a female detective to track down the missing man, but when his body is found in the Thames the case is by no means over. "The Edgar Wallace Mystery Theatre" Partners in Crime: British crime film directed by Peter Duffell and starring Bernard Lee, Moira Redmond and John Van Eyssen, loosely based on the 1918 novel 'The Man Who Knew' by Edgar Wallace. "The Edgar Wallace Mystery Theatre" Clue of the New Pin: TV journalist Tab Holland assists Scotland yard with the murder of a reclusive millionaire whose corpse is discovered locked in a vault. The key to the vault is mysteriously found on the table beside the corpse. "The Edgar Wallace Mystery Theatre" The Fourth Square: The Police investigate the theft of emerald jewellery which had led to murder. "The Edgar Wallace Mystery Theatre" Man at the Carlton Tower: The police investigate the murder of an officer, killed during a jewel robbery. "The Edgar Wallace Mystery Theatre" Clue of the Silver Key: When a hired server is killed after a party for an artist and his fiancée, and soon after, the girl's hot tempered, disapproving old uncle is murdered too, the police look for a connexion. The clues available include a small, brightly painted key to the old man's safe, and some wigs found in an abandoned apartment near a crime site. "The Edgar Wallace Mystery Theatre" Attempt to Kill: A wealthy business man fires one of his employees and becomes the victim of murder attempt. The fired man becomes the prime suspect, but it appears that he himself has been murdered. "The Edgar Wallace Mystery Theatre" Man Detained: A petty burglar sets a chain of events in motion when he steals some money that the owner doesn't want the authorities to know about. "The Edgar Wallace Mystery Theatre" Never Back Losers: Wally Sanders, a horseracing jockey, loses a race and crashes his car to claim an insurance. Jim Matthews, a shrewd and energetic insurance investgator, follows up the company's suspicion of foul play and stumbles deep into a web of corruption concering fixed horse races. The police soon arrive, tipped off in advance. The villain starts to suspect servants and henchmen of being a police spy known as 'Number Six'. "The Edgar Wallace Mystery Theatre" Time to Remember: A gang of jewel thieves rob a house which has just become empty following the recent death of it's rich lady owner. The robbery is not a complete success and one of the gang hides the jewels in the house as he's about to be captured. Later the house is put up for sale and events lead the estate agent to conclude that the jewels may still be there. "The Edgar Wallace Mystery Theatre" Solo for Sparrow: A group of crooks accidentally kill an elderly shop assistant while stealing the keys to the jewellery shop where she works. When his superiors think that the case is better handed over to Scotland Yard, the local detective inspector, Sparrow, decides to go solo to investigate the crime himself. "The Edgar Wallace Mystery Theatre" Playback: A young policeman becomes involved with a glamorous German woman in London, to his cost. "The Edgar Wallace Mystery Theatre" Locker Sixty Nine: A shady business man has perpetrated a fraud that has resulted in the death of a large number of people. His business partner has evidence of the fraud and threatens the fraudster with exposure in the event of any further dishonest dealing. But when the fraudster suddenly receives death threats he decides to fake his own murder in a plan both to get his hands on the evidence. "The Edgar Wallace Mystery Theatre" Death Trap: A young woman commits suicide. Her sister is not ready to let the death go without someone answering a few questions. Namely, was it really suicide, and where is the large amount of money her sister withdrew from the bank the day before her death. "The Edgar Wallace Mystery Theatre" The Set Up: Recently released from prison, Arthur Payne meets a benevolent stranger on a train who says he may be able to help him. A few days later, a second stranger arrives at Payne's houseboat, and Payne reluctantly agrees to carry out a no-risk jewel theft for a fee. When the staged burglary turns to murder, Payne realises he's been set up and he goes on the run. All the evidence points towards Payne being the murderer, but one irrefutable fact troubles Inspector Jackson. They arrange to temporarily swap residences with an older couple who want to visit the country. The older couple are actually part of a team of antiques thieves but are interrupted by a friend of the actress-wife. When the cottage couple find there is no city residence, and are told they are probably being robbed, they return home to find everything intact....except their pets and plants were poisoned. Someone seems to be taking advantage of the situation to upset their lives. "The Edgar Wallace Mystery Theatre" Never Mention Murder: When a surgeon discovers that his wife has a lover he plans murder. "The Edgar Wallace Mystery Theatre" The Main Chance: A disgraced ex-RAF pilot is enlisted into a smuggling scheme by an electronically sophisticated smuggler, who has a room full of computers and recording devices. The pilot is to take stolen diamonds from across the Channel, but he plans a carefully crafted double cross instead. "The Edgar Wallace Mystery Theatre" Change Partners: Ben Arkwright, a co-director in the firm of Arkwright and Gallen, is having an affair with Anna, the strongly willed wife of Ricky Gallen, Ben's partner. Trouble arises. Starring Zena Walker, Kenneth Cope, Basil Henson and Anthony Dawson. Directed by Robert Lynn. "The Edgar Wallace Mystery Theatre" Strangler's Web: What appears to be a cut-and-dried case of murder of an aging onetime showgirl on Hampstead Heath by her lover is complicated by several factors, including a far more respectable paramour, and her insistence that a great inheritance was due her that nobody can verify. A police detective and a solicitor for the defence unravel the mystery. "The Edgar Wallace Mystery Theatre" Dead Man's Chest: It all began as a hoax, a stunt, a trick on the part of two cynical young journalists to spite society and thwart the Establishment. The idea was to expose the frailty of circumstantial evidence, and they planned to fake a murder. But the plan went disastrously wrong. Starring John Thaw, Ann Firbank, John Meillon, Peter Bowles and John Abineri. Directed by Patrick Dromgoole.
