Synopsis:
Bitter Moon: British couple Fiona (Dame Kristin Scott Thomas) and Nigel (Hugh Grant) are sailing to Istanbul en route to India. They encounter a beautiful French woman, and that night, Nigel meets her while dancing alone in the ship's bar. Later, he meets her crippled American husband Oscar (Peter Coyote), who tells him their story. While living in Paris for several years trying to be a writer, he becomes obsessed with a woman he met by chance on a bus. He tracks her down and they start a steamy love affair. Soon, Oscar finds himself enslaved body and soul by her love, and continues to tell Nigel the details of this relationship in various stages over several visits to Oscar's cabin. Death and the Maiden: Paulina Escobar is a political activist whose husband is a prominent lawyer in an unnamed South American country just out of a dictatorship. One day a storm forces her husband to ride home with a neighbor. That chance encounter brings up demons from her past, as she is convinced that the neighbor (Dr. Miranda) was part of the old fascist regime that tortured and raped her, while blindfolded. Paulina takes him captive to determine the truth. Paulina is torn between her psychological repressions and somber memory, Gerardo is torn between his wife and the law, and Dr. Miranda is forced to endure captivity while husband and wife seek out the uncertain truth about the clouded past. The Ninth Gate: Hired by zealous occult scholar Boris Balkan to verify the authenticity of his most prized possession, unscrupulous New York City rare-book dealer Dean Corso is unaware that his life is in grave danger. Because, whether he likes it or not, forces beyond comprehension have already chosen him. And right from the start, thick mystery shrouds the diligent book detective's peril-laden mission. Now, in this soul-condemning quest for clues, there is no turning back--from afar, a cryptic woman with a penetrating gaze follows Corso's every step. But as the intricate mystical engravings of the diabolical leather-bound opus unfold their unfathomable secrets, only one will receive the key to dark enlightenment. However, the question remains. Who is worthy of the tome's glorious black gifts and the ultimate truth of The Nine Gates of the Kingdom of Shadows? Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired: In 1977, Roman Polanski was arrested in Los Angeles on charges he gave drugs and had sex with a 13-year-old girl he was photographing for Vogue. Eleven months later, having pled guilty to one count, he fled to Europe before sentencing. This film examines that year-long period, using archival footage of the media frenzy and of Polanski's life before the charges, clips from his films, and contemporary interviews with many of the principles - attorneys, the victim, and Polanski's friends and associates. Polanski remains enigmatic, but portraits emerge of the machinations of justice and of a judge more interested in his image than his word or the law.
