Synopsis:
No french review yet:
Sigmund Freud suggested that we all have a 'death drive'; an instinct which prods us towards destruction and non-existence. Toni, the subject of Xavier Baig's and Oscar Moreno's documentary, appears to embrace this theory. Physically deteriorating because of his substance abuse and accumulating illness count, Toni has lost none of his petulant charm. He knows that he is approaching death but he remains unapologetic for his sins; instead, Toni justifies his lifestyle, condemns those around him for being 'ordinary' and repeatedly insinuates that he is omnipotent. Despite his addiction, every time he inhales oxygen to combat this, he follows it up with a splif. It is not Toni's likeability which compels one to continue watching Hoy el Dia se Repite Diferente but rather the fascinating manner with which he deals with his impending death. With surprising depth, the nature of motivation, definition, purpose and identity Hoy el Dia se Repite Diferente shows a humanizing vulnerability which is punctuated by a moment of realization: "It's incredible" he remarks about the Spanish sunset, finally aware of his own insignificance. Whilst Baig and Moreno are careful not to weigh down their film with intrusive symbols, they do effectively use cinematic devices to accentuate the film's visually stunning portrait. The rhythm of the film, for example, is perfectly sustained by the use of colorful and beautiful montages which also act to juxtapose the grim, sinister grayness of Toni's home and hospital room.
