Synopsis:

A la mort de son époux, Anne Crandall, maire d'une petite ville du Vermont, a fait une promesse à sa belle-fille : elle ne se remariera jamais... Mais parfois, la vie vous réserve des surprises. Alors qu'elle se rend à New York pour commander une statue à l'effigie de son défunt mari, Anne rencontre le sculpteur George Corday : c'est le coup de foudre! Suite à un quiproquos, elle est arrêtée par la police qui la prend pour strip-teaseuse... Elle réussit à se sortir d'affaire et rentre chez elle, refusant les avances de George en raison de sa promesse. Mais ce dernier utilise le chantage afin qu'elle accepte de le revoir...
