Maria Magdalena Dietrich was the second daughter of the Royal Police Lieutenant Louis Erich Otto Dietrich and his wife Josefine Wilhelmine Elisabeth. Marlene was probably the biggest German Hollywood star. She attended the famous Max Rheinhard acting school and made her film debut in 1922 in "So ist die Mannen". Her big breakthrough came with the leading role as nightclub singer Lola Lola in "Der Blaue Engel". In 1930 she was engaged by Paramount and made 6 films with Josef von Sternberg, including "Morocco" with Gary Cooper. Various comedies followed, including "Angel" by Lubitsch. In the years after World War II, Dietrich shone as a general's widow in "The Nuremberg Court" and "The Sign of Evil" by and with Orson Wells. At the end of her career in 1979, Marlene Dietrich was in front of the camera again in the film "Schöner Gigolo, poor Gigolo". Marlene Dietrich officially died of heart and kidney failure, but her secretary and friend Norma Bosquet explained that the actress probably took her own life from an overdose of sleeping pills.
