Synopsis:
No spanish review yet:
The 2015 Tour de France will be remembered as one of the most exciting in history. Each of the 21 stages had an intriguing story to tell. From the Grand Depart in the cycling-influenced Dutch city of Utrecht, to the ugly crashes that wrecked the hopes of riders with grand dreams and ambitions, there was never a dull moment around this three week sporting spectacle. The Tour also heralded the arrival of cycling in Africa. Led by Kenyan-born Christopher Froome, whose aim was to repeat the performance which earned the Team Sky leader a place on the top podium in 2013, it was the debut appearance of MTN Qhubeka which was justified. A South African-licensed squad filled with a mix of experienced riders from Britain, continental Europe and Scandinavia, it was the selection of representatives from Eritrea which held most interest. Returning to defend the title he won 12 months earlier, Italian hopes again rested on Vincenzo Nibali, while two-time winner Alberto Contador had arrived with the aim of securing a rare double--to conquer both the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France in the same year. Ten Australians were selected across various teams, the most prominent being Richie Porte (Team Sky), Michael Rogers (TinkoffSaxo) and Rohan Dennis (BMC Racing). Each had the potential of providing an important role in their bid to guide their respective team leaders to overall success. Australian history at the Tour de France was re-written when Dennis started the three week journey in the best possible way. But it's the uncertainties and unpredictable nature of the Tour de France which throws up so many variables. The road surfaces and weather conditions were significant in determining the final outcome. Cross-winds on Dutch roads gave way to the cobbled sectors of northern France and the intense heat of the mountains in the Pyrenees and Alps. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the ANZAC tradition, a stage was dedicated to the fallen soldiers from The Great War as the Tour passed the battlefields where thousands of lives were lost. Yet, it was the sporting battles on the open roads where the Tour was won and lost. The Tour is never over until the survivors cross the finish line on the Champs Elysees--never a truer word was spoken in 2015.
