Synopsis:
Gritty psychological drama about a young man who is forced to make a life-changing choice during WWII. Leaving his German-run university after his collaborator father is murdered, 21-year-old Francois (Gregoire Leprince-Ringuet) returns to his home in Luxembourg. With the country under the control of the Nazis, Francois is forced to make a choice between conscription, which means fighting the allies on the western front, or joining a group of deserters hiding out in dire conditions in iron mines in the countryside. After deciding to join the resistance led group, the previously withdrawn Francois soon finds himself having to learn the harshest of life's lessons under the most difficult of circumstances.

François is 21 and lives in a small country that has just been annexed by Nazi Germany. His father, a collaborator of the fascist regime, has forced him to attend the German university. But François has committed a first act of disobedience: he has left this place which professes racial hatred. Now he is faced with a Cornelian dilemma: become a 'forced recruit' and leave for the Russian front to fight the Allies or become a 'Refractory' and hide down a mine for months on end without seeing the sunlight, in the cold and damp, with the Liberation as his only hope.

During World War II, young men in Luxemburg had a profoundly difficult choice: to be drafted involuntarily and fight for the Nazis, or to hide inside a coal mine at the price of their parents' sacrifice. François, whose father was pro-German, chose the latter and started a difficult life underground with communists who did not trust him.
