Synopsis:
Director Simon Aeby's epic film chronicles the time-tested loyalty of two friends during Europe's 16th-century Inquisition. Orphans Martin (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and Georg (Peter McDonald) bond as children, but walk very different paths as adults. Georg follows his calling to join the church, while Martin becomes an army captain. When fate places Martin in the role of executioner, he must choose between friendship and fundamentalist doctrine.

Historical drama set in sixteenth century Europe. Two friends, Martin and Georg, take very different paths in life. Georg goes into the church and becomes Prior at a local abbey. Martin goes into the army and subsequently marries Anna, the shunned daughter of the local executioner. When the latter dies, Martin takes over his job, being the only one he can get because of his marriage to Anna. He becomes a proficient headsman but finds himself and his old friend threatened when an Inquisitor is sent to the area for politicial reasons by the Archbishop.

At the end of the Middle Ages two friends turn out to be at the mercy of the powerful church. Georg, the prior, tries to withstand the pressure of the church. However, his best friend Martin, the executioner, becomes a rebel jeopardizing his existence, his life and the life of his family to protect innocent from the diabolic machinery of the inquisition. The friends become deadly enemies.
